Stanley Motta Ltd, a subsidiary of the Musson Group of Companies, has created an all-female board of directors.
Led by noted businesswoman Melanie Subratie, the board is comprised of seven professionals specialising in a range of fields including law, banking and finance, and business.
The other members of the board are: Sharon Donaldson, managing director of general accident; Patricia Sutherland, executive director of operations at JMMB; Minna Israel, special advisor to the Vice- Chancellor of UWI, Mona; Sandra Glasgow, founder and managing director of BizTactics Ltd; and attorneys-at-law Jennifer Scott and Andrea Kinach.
Commenting on the composition of the board, Subratie noted, “When Stanley Motta Ltd was conceived, it was extremely important to me that we have a particularly strong board of directors; one that could provide exceptional vision and direction to help chart the company’s future trajectory. I therefore gathered together a group of people that I had long admired, all of whom were proven leaders and performers in their respective fields, and it so happens that they were all women.”
Subratie, in a statement from the company, added that corporate boards in general, but even more so those of companies operating in the tech space and the construction industry, have a problem where the representation of women is concerned.
“This is even more remarkable in a country like Jamaica that has the highest proportion of female managers in the world, and yet still has a shortage of women at the highest levels of corporate decision making. The membership of the Stanley Motta board is proof that there are currently many women in Jamaica that are performing at the highest levels across a range of industries. It is my hope that their performance at the helm of this company will inspire a more inclusive culture within corporate Jamaica.”
Stanley Motta’s soon-to- be launched flagship project 58 Half-Way-Tree Road — itself designed by a female architect, Karin Hay — is poised to become Jamaica’s first integrated tech park. The investment, which has exceeded US$30 million, will provide jobs for more than 5,000 Jamaicans in the BPO sector, Jamaica’s fastest growing industry. The facility will include a total of 230,000 square feet of office space rented predominantly to BPO entities along with associated services including day care, ATM and other financial services, health care, as well as a range of food and beverage options.
